Frankie Rose “Interstellar”

…Frankie Rose (@missfrankierose)?  Style Etoile has been listening to Frankie Rose for a while now—she has been a member of Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, and Dum Dum Girls, but we never realized what a musical powerhouse she was on her own.  Even when she formed Frankie Rose and the Outs, we were never gobsmacked by her sound.  Well, consider us godsmacked now.  Frankie Rose’s February release Interstellar is ethereal, synthy, beautiful, and moody, and reminds us of The Cure in all of the right ways.  But not just The Cure—we hear M83, Air, and even a little Portishead in here.  Frankie Rose has finally found her niche, and after seeing her performance at Mercury Lounge on the 5th, we think it’s safe to say she’s here to stay…

Princeton “Clamoring For Your Heart”

…Princeton (@princetonmusic)?  Style Etoile doesn’t like our jealous side, but every now and then it rears its ugly head.  The source of our jealousy right now?  All of you lucky Angelenos.   Not only are you enjoying weather that is easily 30 degrees warmer than New York, but you are also home to Princeton’s January residency at the Bootleg Theater.  Princeton is fronted by twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel and man, do we love them.  They are making music that is one part Cure, one part Morrissey, with a little Gorillaz thrown in for good measure.  This is smooth, synth-y, beautiful stuff and we can’t wait till they show the cold coast some love (hint hint)…

Nurses “Trying To Reach You”

…Nurses?  Nurses is a psych-pop trio from Portland who make awesomely catchy (yet totally original and slightly off-kilter) tracks.  Their recently released Dracula has had some seriously heavy playtime in the Style Etoile world, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon.  Their sound is a mix between Grizzly Bear, MGMT, and The Cure and we are buyin’ what they’re sellin’.  Their Mercury Lounge show last weekend was one of the best we’ve seen in a while—so good we decided to catch them the next night at Glasslands.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Funeral Suits

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Funeral Suits (@funeralsuits)? Ok folks, let’s start the week off right. Funeral Suits is right up our alley—if you like White Lies or The Cure, then these guys are for you. The Dublin trio just released their debut single “Colour Fade” and we can’t stop listening to it. This is the perfect blend of rousing rock ‘n’ roll, 80s new wave, and a little haunting dance and we can’t wait to hear what these guys come up with next . . .

why aren’t you listening to . . . Vondelpark?

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Vondelpark? Wow, color us impressed . . . Vondelpark is officially Style Etoile’s new new favorite band (yes, the double “new” was intentional). Vondelpark’s sound is a magical mixture of dubstep and 80′s New Wave—think Burial meets The Cure (and everyone knows how much we love Burial and The Cure). This London trio manages to make experimental, fresh music that is widely appealing and innovative. Their Sauna EP is perfection and we can’t wait for their upcoming release in July . . .
