why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Chain Gang of 1974 (@tcgo1974)? Style Etoile will never fully recover from LCD Soundsystem’s retirement, but Chain Gang of 1974 is certainly helping ease the pain. Chain Gang of 1974 is Denver-based Kamtim Mohager, and he is making synthed-up, psychedelic, experimental, post-punk dance awesomeness that is reminiscent of Style Etoile favorites New Order, LCD, and Foster the People, but is very much its own futuristic sound. They are one of the reasons we are officially on Lollapalooza count down, and we can’t get enough of their late June release Wayward Fire. Get it and get down.

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Light Asylum (@LightAsylum)? Happy Monday folks, time to get spooky. Style Etoile loves ourselves some gothtronika, but we want to make sure you don’t lump Light Asylum in with the other bands out there layering haunting vocals over a little 80s synth, because these guys are creating their own very distinct, very unique sound. Light Asylum is Brooklyn-based Shannon Funchess and Bruno Coviello, and together the two make shadowy, chill-inducing electronica that sounds like a cross between Grace Jones and New Order. Their recently released In Tension EP is pure magic and DO NOT MISS these guys June 18th at Public Assembly—their live shows are like musical haunted houses in the best way possible . . .

why aren’t you listening to . . . Trophy Wife

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Trophy Wife (@trophywifeband)? Trophy Wife is a trio from Oxford with whom Style Etoile is more than a little obsessed. This is electro-indie at its best and each new track we hear seems to be better than the last. Trophy Wife’s music has been described as “Vampire Weekend playing New Order,” and not to be nitpicky, but we think it’s more like Belle and Sebastian playing New Order. Either way, it is shimmery, minimal, beautiful music and we think you’ll love it. Get their latest album An Innocent Orphan in a Post-Modern World here.
