why aren’t you listening to…

Princeton “Clamoring For Your Heart”

…Princeton (@princetonmusic)?  Style Etoile doesn’t like our jealous side, but every now and then it rears its ugly head.  The source of our jealousy right now?  All of you lucky Angelenos.   Not only are you enjoying weather that is easily 30 degrees warmer than New York, but you are also home to Princeton’s January residency at the Bootleg Theater.  Princeton is fronted by twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel and man, do we love them.  They are making music that is one part Cure, one part Morrissey, with a little Gorillaz thrown in for good measure.  This is smooth, synth-y, beautiful stuff and we can’t wait till they show the cold coast some love (hint hint)…

Wild Beasts “Thankless Thing”

…Wild Beasts (@wildbeasts)?  Is it just us or is there just a ridiculous amount of great new music floating around these days?  Wild Beasts is no exception.  Style Etoile has been a fan of the British quartet for a while, but when we heard this track from the B-side of the band’s upcoming Reach A Bit Further EP, we realized it was most definitely time to give them a shout out.  And while we didn’t need further convincing, their show at Music Hall of Williamsburg two weeks ago solidified our love for the folk-rock crew with vocals that remind us more than a little bit of our love Morrissey.  Check out their 2011 full length Smother—it’s bound to make it onto our Best of 2011 list…

why aren’t you listening to . . . SAFE

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . SAFE? SAFE is Berkley-based Chris Edley and man-oh-man is he good. We mean Arthur Russell meets Morrissey good. SAFE’s music is anything but—it is sparse, haunting, maudlin stuff yet it leaves Style Etoile feeling uplifted rather than morose. SAFE’s electronic sound, background synth, and hint of Caribbean influence act as a counterpoint to Edley’s heartbreaking voice, and we dig it. Do yourself a favor and download his free SAFE EP here.
