why aren’t you listening to . . . Pompeya

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Pompeya (@PPOOMMPPEEYYAA)? As is witnessed by the consistently sunny music posts this week, Style Etoile is feeling pretty good these days. So in keeping with the trend, today we bring you Pompeya. It is a little surprising that Pompeya is from Moscow—a city not exactly known for its joyous disposition—but their music is as upbeat and optimistic as anything we’ve heard recently. This is synth-y, dance-y, tropicana done right—think Whitest Boy Alive meets Jimmy Buffet meets Phoenix. Their debut album Tropical is rad—check it.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Butcher Blades

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Butcher Blades? Happy Wednesday—Butcher Blades is here to catapult us over this hump day with all of their might. This Australian trio is making some seriously joyful jungle tropi-pop that could fit in just as seamlessly on the Lion King soundtrack as on a Kitsune mix, and that’s no easy feat. These guys never fail to lift our spirits, and we have a feeling they will do the same for you. But be warned (or excited) when playing this stuff in the open—there is a fairly good chance of an impromptu drum circle formation . . .

why aren’t you listening to . . . Punches

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Punches (@PunchesBK)? How is it that Punches released their debut self-titled EP at the end of last year and we are just now hearing about them? Considering the fact that Style Etoile loves nothing more than a little sad dance music (80s new wave style), we are more than a little annoyed that no one has shared this Brooklyn crew with us. Because they are RIGHT up our alley—think Joy Division meets LCD Soundsystem—and our friends should know better. Anyhoo, we are thrilled to now have them in our music collection and we think you will be too—check out their 2010 EP Sleepless City and see if you don’t agree.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Theme Park

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Theme Park (@ThemeParkBand)? Anyone who knows Style Etoile knows how much we love David Byrne, and so when we first heard Theme Park, our hearts skipped a beat. And while they may remind us of Talking Heads, this London quintet has a sound that is very much their own—it is part tropical, part dance, part 80s . . . just awesome stuff. Theme Park doesn’t have any US shows scheduled as of now, but we will be the first to let you know when they make it to our neck of the woods . . .

why aren’t you watching . . . Gotye

why aren’t you listening to . . . Vacationer?

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Vacationer? It’s the weekend and even if you don’t have a beach house, Vacationer is here to make you feel sand between your toes and hear waves crashing in the background. These guys have a sound that is part Balam Acab, part Weekend Players—and we can’t think of a more perfect soundtrack to a day in the sun with a cold drink in hand. This is sunny, atmospheric, sample-filled magic and Style Etoile can’t get enough of it.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Walk the Moon

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Walk the Moon (@walkthemoonband)? It is Lollapalooza countdown time and one of the acts Style Etoile is most excited to see is Walk the Moon. The Cincinnati quartet makes catchy pop music that is anthemic and joyous and bursting at the seams with life. They are having fun and we can’t help but have fun along with them. Walk the Moon reminds us a little of the Killers and a little of Spoon, but we are generally having too good of a time when their 2010 release I Want! I Want! is on to be reminded of much of anything.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Arpline

why aren’t you listening to . . .

Arpline (@ArpLine)? Arpline is making psychedelic, urgent, magical rock music. This stuff is 70s glitter meets 80s noise but with a whole new fresh-sounding, current take on things. We saw the Brooklyn quintet last weekarent at the Bushwick Walkabout Festival and we haven’t stopped talking about them since. Their May 2011 release Travel Book is a great way to get the party started, not to mention practice your air guitar—get bangin’ . . .

why aren’t you listening to . . . Baby Monster

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Baby Monster (@BabyMonster)? Style Etoile has been digging on Baby Monster for a couple of years now—we are still talking about their CMJ show at Santos two years ago—and with the release of their self-titled release last month, our love and excitement has been completely invigorated. The Oregon duo makes electrorock that recalls a darker version of Kids-era MGMT. Their music is lush and dancey and dark and we are keeping our fingers crossed for a supporting tour . . . and this time around we know to wear our most comfortable get down shoes.

why aren’t you listening to . . . To Kill A King

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . To Kill A King (@tokillakinguk)? Wow, we haven’t been this excited about a band in a while. To Kill A King is a London quintet who are making beautiful, soulful music that pairs the folksiness of Mumford & Sons with the raw rockishness of Frightened Rabbit. Their single “Fictional State” was released last month by what is fast becoming one of our favorite labels, Communion. They are currently on tour in the UK but we will keep you posted if they hop over the pond and show us some love . . .
