Frank Turner “I Am Disappeared”

…Frank Turner (@fthc)?  Style Etoile thought we should end the year with a bang, so for our final music post of 2011, Frank Turner seemed pretty perfect.  Those who know us know we have a think for Brit rock, so throw in a cup of folk and a dash of punk and we are bound to devour the whole thing.  Turner is a poet and his dark, yet beautiful lyrics act in perfect harmony with the urgent, jangly guitar rock with which it is often paired (think Frightened Rabbit meets Green Day).  His 2011 release England Keep My Bones always sounds right, and we can’t wait to catch him when he brings his act to this coast…

We Are Augustines “Chapel Song”

…We Are Augustines (@weareaugustines)?  We are mad.  Furious, even.  The source of our anger?  The fact that we just discovered We Are Augustines (thanks Blackraptor)—a full month AFTER they hit CMJ.  How have we not heard of these guys before?  They make the kind of catch-y, unique, earnest, gravel-y, blues-y rock and roll that we love to love—think Frightened Rabbit meets Arcade Fire meets The Black Keys—and we are furious we didn’t get to see their magic live.  Brooklyn’s We Are Augustines is Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson (formerly of Pela).  They released their debut album Rise Ye Sunken Ships this summer and each song on it is better than the last…

Bastille “Flaws”

…Bastille (@BastilleDan)?  Style Etoile is excited about Bastille.  Bastille is South London’s Dan Smith and he is making music that lies at the crossroads of synth, rock, pop, and indie–sort of like an 80s dance version of Frightened Rabbit.  Bastille’s Double A-Side summer release Flaws/Icarus has left us longing for more—this guy is one to watch…stay tuned.

why aren’t you listening to . . . To Kill A King

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . To Kill A King (@tokillakinguk)? Wow, we haven’t been this excited about a band in a while. To Kill A King is a London quintet who are making beautiful, soulful music that pairs the folksiness of Mumford & Sons with the raw rockishness of Frightened Rabbit. Their single “Fictional State” was released last month by what is fast becoming one of our favorite labels, Communion. They are currently on tour in the UK but we will keep you posted if they hop over the pond and show us some love . . .
