why aren’t you listening to…

Daughter “Love”

…Daughter (@ohdaughter)?  Style Etoile usually likes our Friday posts to be upbeat, dance-y numbers to get you amped for the weekend.  But when we came across this STUNNING track by Daughter, we knew we had to break the rules a bit.  Be forewarned—this is a tear-jerker, but in the best way possible.  “Love” is the closing track off of Daughter’s forthcoming Wild Youth EP (out November 21st), and man is it beautiful.  It is haunting and intimate and stirring and stark.  Daughter is North Londoner Elena Tonra, and she reminds us of a cross between Emiliana Torrini and Florence Welch.  Check her out, but make sure you have your tissues handy…

why aren’t you listening to . . . Rave On Buddy Holly

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Rave On Buddy Holly? With Buddy Holly covers by such artists as The Black Keys, Florence and the Machine, Paul McCartney, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket (just to name a few), this album is magic to our ears . . .

why aren’t you listening to . . . Alex Winston

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Alex Winston (@iamalexwinston)? Style Etoile has a new crush and her name is Alex Winston. Winston is a young beauty from Detroit and she is making power girl pop anthems that have catchy hooks but enough edge to keep us feeling cool when she’s crooning on our headphones. Winston sounds like a cross between Florence and the Machine and Ellie Goulding. She nods to 60s sounds while remaining completely current and if her early 2011 EP Sister Wife is any indication, this lady is bound for greatness . . .

why aren’t you listening to . . . The Jezabels

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . The Jezabels (@thejezabels)? If Fleetwood Mac and Florence and the Machine made sweet, sweet love and produced a lovely, gothic, shiny rock band baby, it would be The Jezabels. This Sydney quartet’s music moves us—it is haunting and sad and sexy all while getting its groove on. Take your pick from any of their EPs—they don’t make bad music—and see if you don’t fall in love with them like Style Etoile has. Their live shows are in a league of their own—we had quite the out-of-body experience seeing them at SXSW—and we can’t wait for them to bring their magic back to the States for round two.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Sarah Jaffe

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Sarah Jaffe (@sayjaffe)? Style Etoile has yet to listen to Sarah Jaffe without getting goosebumps. We could listen to her read the phone book and hang on every word—she is just. so. good. Sarah Jaffe makes beautiful, haunting music that sounds like a cross between The xx and Florence and the Machine. Her 2010 album Suburban Nature was perfection, and we can’t get enough of her 2011 releases. Sarah’s uptempo numbers always lift our spirits, but it is her slow pieces that really get inside us. Check out the above Daytrotter Sessions recording and see if you don’t agree . . .
