Gem Club “Twins”

…Gem Club (@iamgemclub)?  My God, this is breathtaking.  Every once in a (great) while, Style Etoile hears a song and tears automatically (and without warning) spring to our eyes.  This happened the first time we heard Bon Iver’s The Wolves (Act 1&2) and Cinematic Orchestra’s To Build A Home.  It also happened the first time we heard the above track by the hauntingly beautiful Gem Club.  The tears aren’t necessarily a result of sadness, but more a result of deep emotional stirring.  Point being, this is good stuff.  Way better than good, actually.  Gem Club’s full length debut, Breakers, is a whispering journey that is pure magic from start to finish.  Do yourself a favor and check it out…

Grandpa Was A Lion “Belgian Waves”

…Grandpa Was A Lion (@GWALROCK)?  Sometimes we feel like feeling.  Dance-y pop will always have a place in our heart, but the real reason that Style Etoile loves music is because it makes us know that we aren’t alone in this world.  To hear an emotion we have felt articulated by someone else–whether it be through lyric or melody–is a very moving and empowering thing.  Grandpa Was a Lion makes us feel.  Every one of their songs stirs something inside us, and while that something it is often melancholy, it is beautiful nonetheless.  GWAL is Justin D’Onofrio and he touches our hearts in the subtle yet deep way that Bon Iver, Right Away Great Captain, and The Middle East do.  His latest album, Seven Songs came out this month, and there is no way this doesn’t make our top ten of 2011 list…

Megafaun “State/Meant”

…Megafaun (@megafaun)?  Unfortunately for Megafaun, they are the band that Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) was in before he went on to record as a solo artist.  We say unfortunately, not because Bon Iver isn’t one of the most utterly breathtakingly talented artists out there, but because Megafaun is so much more than “Bon Iver’s old band.”  In fact, their latest EP Megafaun will most likely make it into our top 2011 list.  The North Carolina trio makes Americana psych-folk that sounds like a cross between the Grateful Dead and Middle Brother and man, do they put on a great live show.  Style Etoile caught them at Mercury Lounge last month, and we had a smile plastered to our faces for the rest of the week…

why aren’t you listening to . . . Benjamin Francis Leftwich

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Benjamin Francis Leftwich (@BenLeftwich)? With a name like Benjamin Francis Leftwich, you are pretty much destined to be a folk musician, and BFL goes above and beyond fulfilling his moniker’s prophecy. This twenty-one-year-old British singer songwriter is making beautiful folk rock that sounds like a cross between Bon Iver, Ryan Adams, and Jose Gonzalez. His first full-length, Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm, came out last week and it is true perfection from start to finish—there isn’t a single song Style Etoile even came close to skipping—and that’s pretty rare these days . . . do yourself a favor and take a listen.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Ben Howard

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Ben Howard (@benhowardmusic)? It’s Friday night and we’re in the mood for some sparse, beautiful music to help wind down the week. Today’s track is from Ben Howard, and it is hard to put into words how beautiful his songs are. Yes, it is indie, acoustic folk. Yes, it reminds us of Jose Gonzalez and Bon Iver. But those descriptors don’t really explain why our goosebumps get higher with each finger pluck of his guitar—there is intangible magic here and we suggest you just go ahead and take listen and let your heart explain what our words can’t.

why aren’t you listening to . . . Paul Thomas Saunders

why aren’t you listening to . . .

. . . Paul Thomas Saunders (@PTSofficial)? Sometimes Style Etoile hears a song that makes us feel like we have just taken a dip in the most refreshing pool imaginable—we feel cool, awake, peaceful, and aware. ALL of Paul Thomas Saunders’ songs make us feel that way. The 20 year old Brit makes music that sounds like Band of Horses meets Bon Iver meets Radiohead circa The Bends—high pitched, intimate, soaring vocals paired with layered instrumentation that sounds different with each listen. His Lilac and Wisteria EP comes out July 4th and we can. not. wait.
